Northwestern AD Phillips says athletes need a vote when it comes to setting NCAA policy

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips says college athletes need more than just a voice when it comes to issues that affect them. They need a vote.

Phillips says that "has to happen" as the NCAA tackles a list of issues concerning athletes. He insists, however, that unionization is not the way to go.

As Big Ten administrators gathered at the conference's headquarters for two days of meetings, there were several major issues hanging over the landscape. Unionization tops the list and the epicenter for that is Northwestern, where former quarterback Kain Colter is leading the push to form one. The issue is currently before the National Labor Relations Board.

Phillips says it "goes against all that is what we believe is right in the landscape of college athletics."
