New York Giants defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul reportedly had his right index finger amputated Wednesday after suffering an injury in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July.
Fox Sports, citing an unnamed source, reports Pierre-Paul discussed several options over the last few days to save the finger. However, an amputation was deemed to have the fewest complications.
Pierre-Paul, 26, is not expected to have any other amputations at this time and may only be out of action a few months, according to Fox Sports.
The defensive lineman turned away Giants staff members who tried to visit him in the hospital.
He hurt himself in an apparent fireworks injury over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Pierre-Paul mentioned fireworks in a video posted to his Instagram account Saturday, taken has he held a baby in a street near a parked rental van.
"Talk about fireworks on the ground," Pierre-Paul said.
Pierre-Paul, the former 2010 first-round pick of the Giants, was hoping to negotiate a long term contract with New York in the offseason. He hasn’t signed a one-year, $14.8 million contract tender either.
He has recorded 42 career sacks, including 12 ½ last season.
ESPN first reported the news of Pierre-Paul’s operation.
