New Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton making big changes with scheme, aggressive style

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton cut off his signature hair braids for training camp. His next makeover is more dramatic — overhauling Cleveland's defense.

Horton, who spent the past two seasons in Arizona, is switching the Browns' defensive front from a 4-3 to an attacking, 3-4 alignment. Horton's defense puts a premium on pressuring the quarterback and he can rattle off numerous statistics showing that his defensive system is the one that works best in today's NFL.

Horton said the Browns are embracing the change and he's been encouraged by how quickly his players are adapting to both the system and his coaching style. Cornerback Joe Haden said Horton's scheme will allow Cleveland's defensive backs to make more plays because quarterbacks will be under duress and eager to get rid of the ball.

The Browns are practicing in pads Saturday for the first time in training camp.
