Netherlands secures semifinal spot in women's field hockey

The Netherlands edged South Korea on Saturday to guarantee a spot in the semifinals of the women's field hockey tournament.

Carlien Dirkse van den Heuvel tallied the decisive goal in the 36th minute, and the Dutch held on for a 3-2 victory. The defending gold medalists are 4-0 in Pool A play and are assured a spot in the final four.

Great Britain also had a chance to secure a semifinal berth, but lost to China and is now 3-1-0 in Pool A.

In the other Pool A contest, Japan tied Belgium.

In Pool B, the United States lost to New Zealand and fell to 1-3-0 in the group stage. New Zealand, Argentina and Australia all have 3-1-0 records in the pool, but Argentina is in first based on goal differential.

The Argentines beat Germany on Saturday, while Australia edged South Africa.

The final women's pool matches take place Monday.
