After a stellar Week 1 showing, the 49ers defense took a big hit in Week 2.
The Steelers racked up 43 points and 453 total yards, and essentially did as they pleased on offense.
Even after allowing just three points to the Vikings in the season opener, was it fair to ask why the defense looked so much different one week later?
NaVorro Bowman explained his reasoning, without much hesitation.
"You're comparing this team to what we had in the past," Bowman said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "We had probably eight or nine vets on our defense."
For as much as the 49ers don't want to give that excuse, it's the plain and simple truth.
Much was talked about in the offseason surrounding key losses in players like Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith and Aldon Smith, among others.
For those expecting the 49ers defense to look as dominant as they did in Week 1 on a consistent basis in 2015 simply isn't realistic.
