Nationals to shut down Arroyo, try rehab on injured shoulder

VIERA, Fla. (AP) The Washington Nationals will rest Bronson Arroyo for up to two weeks before beginning rehab on his injured right shoulder.

General manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement on Saturday. He says Arroyo will avoid any throwing or shoulder work for seven days to two weeks. He'll then begin a shoulder strengthening program, followed by a throwing program.

The 39-year-old Arroyo is attempting a comeback after missing all of 2015 following Tommy John surgery and surgery to repair a partly torn rotator cuff. He has not pitched in the majors since June 14, 2014.

Arroyo, a 2006 All-Star with the Cincinnati Reds, signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals in January. The 15-year veteran right-hander has a 145-131 career record with a 4.19 ERA.
