Monfils, Kohlschreiber land in Metz quarters

Metz, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Former champion and French crowd favorite Gael Monfils and No. 3 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber posted second-round victories Thursday at the Moselle Open tennis event.

The second-seeded Monfils vanquished Pole Michal Przysiezny 7-5, 6-1 on the indoor hardcourts at Metz Arena.

Monfils titled here in 2009 and was the runner-up in 2005.

His quarterfinal opponent will be another Polish player, seventh-seeded 6- foot-8 slugger Jerzy Janowicz, who moved on with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Finnish left-hander Jarkko Nieminen.

Meanwhile, the '09 Metz runner-up to Monfils, Kohlschreiber, got past Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 7-5 and will face fellow German Jan-Lennard Struff on Friday. Struff upended fifth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4 on Day 4.

Also, sixth-seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa outlasted Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) and rising eighth-seeded Belgian David Goffin drubbed German Tobias Kamke 6-1, 6-3. Goffin is rewarded with a quarterfinal match against top-seeded and two-time Metz champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, while Sousa will encounter 2008 runner-up Paul-Henri Mathieu of the host nation on Friday.

Two-time winner Gilles Simon beat the then reigning two-time champ Tsonga in last year's all-French finale.

Frenchmen have won five straight and seven of the 11 titles in Metz.

The 2014 titlist will earn $100,000.
