Monaco rolls; Robredo exits Bastad

Third seed Juan Monaco gained safe entry into the quarterfinals, while former top-10 star and two-time Bastad champion Tommy Robredo was among Wednesday's second-round losers at the Swedish Open.

The 2009 Bastad runner-up, gritty Argentine Monaco handled Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen 6-4, 6-2, while the fourth-seeded veteran Robredo was knocked out by fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos in 6-3, 6-4 fashion on Day 3 on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium. Robredo titled here in 2006 and 2008.

In other second-round play, fifth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov fought back to beat Italian Filippo Volandri, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Argentine Carlos Berlocq topped Slovenian fellow non-seed Blaz Kavcic, 7-5, 6-3.

Dimitrov will meet Monaco in Friday's quarterfinals, while Berlocq will face Ramos in the round of eight.

On Thursday, second-round matches will come for top seeds Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Almagro. Berdych will battle Argentine Martin Alund, while Almagro will be opposed by fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The big Czech Berdych was a Bastad finalist in 2005 and 2008, while Almagro was last year's runner-up to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, titled here in 2010, and was also a runner-up in 2007.

The winner of this $560,000 event will collect $100,000.
