Midgets champion Abreu making move to NASCAR Trucks Series

Published April 28, 2016

Associated Press

Former USAC Midget car champion Rico Abreu will continue working his way through NASCAR by driving full time on the Truck Series this season.

Abreu, the 2014 USAC Midget champion, announced his move on Friday — a day before defending his Chili Bowl victory from a year ago.

The 23-year-old Californian, who stands 4-foot-4 and uses blocks in the accelerator area of his race cars, will drive for ThorSport while continuing his rapid ascent up the ranks of the most popular drivers in the sport.

Abreu was fifth in the NASCAR K&N East Series standings last year. He earned his first career stock car win at Columbus Motor Speedway in July.

He made his Truck Series debut in November in Phoenix and finished 28th and 13th in two late-season races.
