Mets to call up Flores

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets announced that they will recalled infielder Wilmer Flores from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

Flores hit .307 with five doubles, five homers and 25 RBI with the 51s this season. He was shifted to shortstop by the organization late in spring training and was in Triple-A refining his skills at the position.

The Mets designated infielder Omar Quintanilla for assignment on Thursday to open the roster spot. Quintanilla hit .207 with three RBI in 15 games, mostly as a reserve shortstop.

It's conceivable that Flores, who played mostly second base and third base in the minors, will become the everyday shortstop with his call up. One of the Mets' top offensive prospects, it's unlikely New York recalled him to sit behind starter Ruben Tejada.

Tejada is hitting just .183 with six RBI and four runs scored in 29 games.

In one game earlier this season, Flores went 0-for-4. In 27 games last season, he hit just .211 with a homer and 13 RBI.
