Mets' Niese to skip next start

New York Mets pitcher Jon Niese will not make his next scheduled start due to tendinitis in his left shoulder, the team announced Thursday.

Niese was unable to participate in his usual bullpen session after his most recent outing, a seven-inning stint Monday against the New York Yankees in which he allowed just one run in a no-decision. He will attempt to throw again next Tuesday with the hopes of starting the Mets' June 7 home game against Miami.

Collin McHugh will instead draw the assignment when the Mets visit the Marlins this coming Saturday. The right-hander has surrendered four runs in three innings over a pair of relief appearances since being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this month.

Niese has gone 3-5 with a 4.40 earned run average over his first 11 starts of 2013.
