Mets' David Wright having neck surgery in California

Published June 16, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) New York Mets third baseman David Wright will have surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck.

The Mets announced he'll have the operation on Thursday in Marina del Rey, California. The decision to proceed with surgery was made after weeks of tests, rest and anti-inflammatory injections.

Wright says in a statement that his ''neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks.'' He says while it's frustrating, he's ''determined to make a full recovery and get back on the field as soon as I can to help the Mets win.''

The team says Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the surgery. He has worked in collaboration with Wright and the Mets medical staff in developing a plan for Wright's care.

Wright was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 30.
