Mets considering replacing Matz with Colon in NLDS rotation

After being scratched from his start on Thursday, New York Mets rookie Steven Matz might be scratched from the Mets' postseason rotation as well.

Matz, who won't start Thursday due to discomfort in his back, was originally expected to be the Mets' No. 4 starter in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but now it appears as though the Mets are leaning towards replacing him with veteran righty Bartolo Colon in the NLDS rotation.

"We've got to make a determination if he's going to fit or not," manager Terry Collins said Wednesday.

If his back discomfort subsides, Matz could make another start before the postseason, which would increase his chances of making the postseason rotation.

However, the Mets might not be willing to take a gamble, as he would be ineligible for a potential NLCS if he becomes injured in the NLDS.

"You're talking about a young guy who's had a back problem that put him on the DL for [two months]. He comes out, throws [four] starts -- and I realize it's not the same issue, it's on the other side of his back, but it's still an issue. We've got to get this guy ready."
