Melzer ousted; Baghdatis advances in Winston-Salem

Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Second seed Jurgen Melzer was a round upset victim, while eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis moved into the Salem Open.

The left-handed Austrian Melzer was sent packing by Russian Igor Andreev 7-5, 6-3, while the former Australian Open runner-up Baghdatis handled American Ryan Sweeting 7-5, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University. Andreev popped eight aces and broke Melzer's serve three times en route to the upset.

American qualifier Michael Russell snuck past France's Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, while Japanese qualifier Kei Nishikori overcame Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Frenchman Julien Benneteau blitzed Brazilian fellow qualifier Ricardo Mello 6-3, 6-3 in opening-round action on Day 2.

Additional first-round wins came for Belgian Steve Darcis, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, Israeli Dudi Sela and Argentine Carlos Berlocq.

The winner of this final U.S. Open tuneup will collect $74,630.
