Huntington, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Marshall running back Steward Butler was kicked off the team Wednesday after being arrested and charged in the beating of two gay men.

Butler turned himself in Wednesday and was charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery over the April 5 attack, the Herald-Dispatch reported.

He is accused of shouting derogatory words at the men and punching them in the face moments after seeing them kiss on a street corner in Huntington.

Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick tweeted Wednesday afternoon that he and head coach Doc Holliday decided to dismiss Butler from the team "in light of additional information regarding his charges."

Butler, a redshirt junior, was Marshall's second-leading rusher last season with 798 yards on 107 carries in 12 games. He scored seven touchdowns.
