Marshall , Nevada top San Jose 80-55 in MWC opener

RENO, Nev. (AP) Marcus Marshall scored 25 points, Leland King II had a double-double off the bench and Nevada defeated San Jose State 80-55 on Wednesday night in a Mountain West Conference opener.

Marshall and Jordan Caroline combined for 25 points as the Wolf Pack (12-2), who have a seven-game winning streak and their best start in 10 years, took a 40-29 lead. They held the Spartans (7-7), who had won three straight, to 27 percent shooting in the second half and steadily pulled away.

King had 13 points and 12 rebounds, both his best at Nevada after transferring from Brown. D.J. Fenner added 14 points off the bench, Caroline finished with 13 points and Cameron Oliver had 10 rebounds to go with nine points.

Brandon Clarke had 18 points and nine rebounds for San Jose State, which was outrebounded 50-35. Gary Williams Jr. added 14 points off the bench.

There were 48 fouls called in the game plus each team received two technical during a dustup 5:11 into the second half with the Wolf Pack up 16.

Nevada lost starter Josh Hall to an injury late in the first half when he was taken off on a stretcher.
