Marlins SS Ramirez placed on DL

The Florida Marlins have placed shortstop Hanley day disabled list due to a sprained left shoulder.

The move is retroactive to August 3 for Ramirez, who could return for the opener of a four-game series at San Diego next Thursday night.

Ramirez suffered the injury in a game against the New York Mets last Tuesday night. So far this season, he's hitting .243 with 10 homers and 45 RBI. On July 18, Ramirez surpassed Jeff Conine for second place in franchise history in hits, with 1,007. Luis Castillo is the franchise leader, with 1,273.

This is his second time on the DL, also being shelved in June due to a back strain.

The Marlins also optioned pitcher Brad Hand to Double-A Jacksonville, and recalled pitchers Chris Volstad and Jose Ceda from Triple-A New Orleans.

Hand was 1-4 with a 4.08 ERA in eight starts in his rookie season in the majors.

Volstad was 5-8 with a 5.58 ERA in 20 starts for the parent club, but hasn't been up in the majors since a July 22 start against the Mets.

Ceda has spent most of this season pitching for New Orleans, posting a 3-1 mark with a 1.36 ERA in 36 relief efforts. The right-hander has a 10.13 ERA in four games for the Marlins this year.
