The Seattle Mariners on Sunday placed first baseman Justin Smoak on the 15-day disabled list and selected the contract of pitcher Jeremy Bonderman from Triple-A Tacoma.

Smoak injured his oblique in a 5-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on May 25. He has played in just one game since, pinch-hitting in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres, making the DL move retroactive to May 30.

The 26-year-old is batting .240 with three homers, eight RBI and a team-high 25 walks over 46 games this season.

Bonderman compiled a 2-4 record and 4.52 earned run average over 11 starts with Tacoma this season. The 30-year-old right-hander, scheduled to start Sunday, last appeared in the majors with Detroit in 2010 and has a career 67-77 record and 4.89 ERA over eight MLB seasons, all with the Tigers.

Seattle also designated infielder Vinnie Catricala for assignment and traded outfielder Francisco Martinez to the Tigers for a player to be named later or cash considerations by June 15.
