Mariners draft Ken Griffey Jr.'s son Trey

The Seattle Mariners paid tribute to a legend Saturday in the MLB Draft, selecting centerfielder Trey Griffey - son of incoming Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. - in the 24th round. Griffey wore the No. 24 in Seattle before switching to his father's No. 30 in Cincinnati.

Trey Griffey is an outstanding athlete, but he's not a baseball player. Trey stopped playing baseball as a child to focus on football, and he's caught four touchdowns in his first three seasons with the Arizona Wildcats.

According to ESPN, a number of famous sons were taken Saturday in the draft. Torii Hunter Jr. was selected by the Los Angeles Angels, and Quinn Hoffman - son of reliever Trevor Hoffman - was taken by the Padres in the 36th round.

While these are nice gestures, there's a (small) chance that the clubs missed out on a future All-Star with a ceremonial pick. Mark Grace (24th round), Dusty Baker (26), Ken Griffey (29), Raul Ibanez (36) and Mark Buehrle (38) are were all selected very late in their respective drafts, but went on to have great careers.
