Maple Leafs hire Brendan Shanahan as president; Toronto native will be introduced Monday

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Brendan Shanahan has been hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs' president and alternate governor.

The Toronto native was hired Friday. He's been serving as the NHL's director of player safety since 2011. Shanahan played 1,524 career NHL games in 21 years and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year.

The team says Shanahan will start his duties immediately, and it will hold a news conference on Monday. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president Tim Leiweke and Leafs vice president and general manager Dave Nonis plan to attend along with Shanahan.

The Leafs were eliminated from playoff contention this week after a stretch of eight straight regulation losses in March derailed their season.
