BEREA, Ohio -- Browns backup quarterback Johnny Manziel is throwing passes in practice for the first time since Aug. 23 after being slowed by a sore right elbow.

Manziel did not play in Cleveland's final two exhibition games. The second-year QB threw several short passes during the 30 minutes of Monday's practice open to media members. Manziel had been throwing tennis balls and weighted balls last week while resting his elbow.

Manziel appears on track for Sunday's season opener against the Jets. He's listed as Cleveland's No. 2 quarterback behind Josh McCown.

Also, the Browns signed quarterback Austin Davis, who went 3-5 as a starter last season for St. Louis. Davis, who was released on Saturday, completed 180 of 284 passes for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions last season. Four of those picks were returned for TDs.
