Mangurian to coach Columbia football

Well-traveled football coach Pete Mangurian has returned to the Ivy League as Columbia's new head coach.

Mangurian, 56, was a head coach in the league previously at Cornell, where he went 16-14 in three seasons from 1998-2000.

Columbia will hold a news conference Friday afternoon to formerly introduce Mangurian. He succeeds Norries Wilson, who was fired on Nov. 20 following a 1-9 season and a 17-43 record in six seasons.

Mangurian's coaching experience spans 31 seasons over stops at his alma mater, LSU, as well as SMU, New Mexico State and Stanford, and in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and, most recently, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"As soon as I stepped on campus, I was energized," Mangurian said. "What excited me the most was that every person I spoke to had the same enthusiasm, commitment and passion for the athletics program and the football program in particular. We will need collaboration to be successful and I felt that immediately. This is a tremendous opportunity to give this outstanding university an outstanding football program."
