Major champion Singh no longer planning on Olympics

Published April 13, 2016

Associated Press

Vijay Singh said Wednesday he's no longer planning to play in the Olympic golf tournament this summer.

Singh, the 53-year-old three-time major champion, said he had hoped to compete for Fiji when the sport returned to the Rio Games later this year. However, Singh said the Olympic tournament came at a bad time when he would rather be working on tour to improve his game.

Singh starts play Thursday in the opening round of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. Singh has had just three top 10s in 12 previous appearances here.

He said the outbreak of the Zika virus, deemed an epidemic in Central and South America, was not a serious concern in skipping the Olympics, "but you don't want to get it."
