Long-time Braves broadcaster Van Wieren dies

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Long-time Atlanta Braves broadcaster Pete Van Wieren died Saturday morning. He was 69 years old.

The Braves said Van Wieren passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Elaine, sons Jon and Steve and his grandchildren," the Braves said in a statement Saturday.

Van Wieren called Braves games for 33 years, retiring after the 2008 season. He was part of the first national television broadcast crew for the Braves on Superstation TBS in 1976, alongside Ernie Johnson, Sr. and Skip Caray.

Caray and Van Wieren were inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame together in 2004.

Van Wieren, a native of Rochester, New York, also called games for the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and the NHL's Atlanta Flames, as well as NBA games for TBS and TNT. He was named Atlanta's top sportscaster in 1977, and was also a 10-time winner of Georgia Sportscaster of the Year.
