Levin misses the cut and gets in US Open

The sometimes quirky math involved in the world ranking helped Spencer Levin get into the U.S. Open.

Levin was at No. 61 in the world and missed the cut in the St. Jude Classic. Because he had points fall off his world ranking ledger, however, he moved to No. 60 on Sunday and earned a spot in the U.S. Open for being among the top 60 in the world in the final week before the championship.

Brendan Grace of South Africa also got in through the top 60. The USGA set aside five spots from the ranking. Because only two were needed, three alternates were added to the field — Justin Hicks, Kyle Thompson and Colt Knost.

Levin getting in means that Jordan Spieth of Texas is the first alternate.
