Korhonen claims European Q School

Girona, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Mikko Korhonen carded a 5-under 67 on Thursday to claim medalist honors at the European Tour's Final Qualifying Stage tournament.

Korhonen finished the six-round tournament at 20-under-par 408 at PGA Catalunya Resort. Korhonen kept his tour card for the fourth time in the last five years via Q School.

The Finland native got going with birdies at the second and fourth. He jumped to 19-under with an eagle at the par-5 seventh. Around the turn. Korhonen birdied the 12th, but gave that shot back as he stumbled to a bogey at the 16th. He birdied the last to claim medalist honors by two strokes.

Ricardo Gonzalez, a four-time European Tour winner, also closed with a 67 to take second at minus-18. Renato Paratore, who led entering the final round, stumbled to a 1-over 73. He dipped into third place at 16-under-par 412.

Matt Ford (70) took fourth at minus-15, while The Vivendi Cup winner John Parry (67), Adrian Otaegui (67) and Eduardo de la Riva (71) tied for fifth at 14-under 415.

Twenty-seven players made the cut for tour cards and that number came at 7- under-par 421.

Among those to miss the cut were Sebastien Gros, who bogeyed his last three holes to fall to minus-6 and Carlos Del Moral, who had three straight double- bogeys on the front nine en route to a 77, which left him at minus-4. Del Moral had kept his tour card via Q School last year.
