Kansas City Chiefs give franchise icon Derrick Thomas' son a tryout

Donnell Alexander plays on the opposite side of the line of his famous father, but he hopes to make a name for himself with the same franchise.

The son of Kansas City Chiefs icon Derrick Thomas just finished a tryout during a three-day rookie minicamp with the Chiefs.

Thomas, an outside linebacker who spent his entire Hall of Fame career with the Chiefs, passed away in 2000 after a tragic automobile accident left him paralyzed. He died two weeks later of a pulmonary embolysm.

According to a team profile of Alexander's tryout, he was too young to remember a whole lot about his famous father.

Alexander, a running back who played at Colorado State and Akron, faces an uphill battle to crack a crowded Chiefs backfield.

But he seems to have at least left an impression on head coach Andy Reid:

That tattoo says "Made in K.C."

It's fitting, given he grew up there and was a high school star there.

Now, Alexander just hopes he can make a pro football career there, too.
