The cheers for Jordan Spieth began not when the fans lining the eighth hole watched him walked by Friday at the PGA Championship.
It was when they saw the hand-held scoreboard tailing behind.
Spieth was at 6-under par, and while his share of the lead didn't last, he was right in the mix at another major. Spieth holed a bunker shot on the 18th hole, then made three more birdies on the front nine for a 5-under 67. He was one shot behind David Lingmerth among early starters, and sure to factor going into the weekend.
The 22-year-old Texan narrowly missed birdie putts on the last two holes and figured he would be four or five shots behind after the second round because the wind had calmed.
