The lawyer who accidentally sent a text about Johnny Manziel to the Associated Press has been removed from his legal team, according to a spokesperson for the troubled quarterback.

Defense attorney Bob Hinton mistakenly sent the AP a lengthy text suggesting Manziel's legal team was seeking a plea deal and indicating that he'd received a receipt from a drug paraphernalia store indicating Manziel had spent over $1,000 there shortly after being involved in a hit-and-run crash last week.

The text, which was meant for Manziel's lead attorney, also said "Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle," indicating he didn't think Manziel could pass a drug test.

Spokesperson Denise Michaels, who said previously that taking a plea deal was never a consideration for Manziel, tweeted Monday morning that Hinton had withdrawn from the defense.

The 23-year-old Manziel is accused of hitting and threatening former girlfriend Colleen Crowley during a night out in January. He faces a misdemeanor assault charge that carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

His father spoke out on Friday, saying Manziel is "a druggie and he needs help" and that he hopes his son winds up in jail.

Manziel is currently a free agent, having been cut by the Cleveland Brown in March. He's also been dropped by two agents since the season ended.
