Halle, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - The only seed to see action on Monday came up a loser at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open.

Eighth-seeded 6-foot-8 Pole Jerzy Janowicz gave way to French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, at Gerry Weber Stadium.

Another Polish loser on Day 1 was Michal Przysiezny, who succumbed to German wild card Peter Gojowczyk, 7-5, 6-4.

Also on Monday, Portuguese Joao Sousa grounded German wild card Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-2, German wild card Dustin Brown dropped Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-4, and German Philipp Kohlschreiber, the 2011 Halle champion and the 2008 runner-up, handled Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4.

On Tuesday, fifth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet and sixth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny will take to the courts for first-round matches. Youzhny was last year's runner-up to Halle stalwart Roger Federer.

This week's top seeds are last week's French Open champion Rafael Nadal and the six-time Halle titlist Federer. Nadal will open up against Brown, while Federer will take on Sousa in the round of 16.

Halle serves a tune-up for Wimbledon, which will commence June 23 at the All England Club.
