Jaguars release veteran safety Sergio Brown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran safety Sergio Brown, parting ways with him a day before players report for the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program.

Brown started four games last season after signing a three-year contract worth $7 million in free agency. He was due to make $2.25 million in 2016, apparently too much for someone not in the mix for a starting spot.

The Jaguars signed former Cleveland safety Tashaun Gipson in March to solidify a secondary that has been among the league's worst in coach Gus Bradley's three seasons.

The team also has fourth-year pro Josh Evans and James Sample, a fourth-round draft pick in 2015, in the secondary as well as returning starter Johnathan Cyprien.

Brown has played in 86 games with New England, Indianapolis and Jacksonville. He has 139 tackles and an interception.
