Jacob deGrom's newborn son is reportedly doing much better after a health scare that prompted the Mets right-hander to leave the team over the weekend.

The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year was placed on the bereavement family medical emergency list on Saturday after health complications with his son, Jaxon Anthony, who was born Monday night. DeGrom returned home to DeLand, Florida, to be with his family.

Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters baby deGrom's condition was improving.

"Last night I talked to him," Collins said before Sunday's game in Cleveland. "The baby is doing better. That was a good sign. I just told Jake he needs to get some rest and mix in a meal."

Collins added that the scare has left deGrom "mentally exhausted."

The Mets ace has been conditioning by throwing bullpen sessions at the New York team's spring training facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The 2015 All-Star could remain on the bereavement list up to seven days, but team officials believe he could rejoin the team for a shortened start as soon as next weekend in Atlanta if his family situation allows, according to ESPN.
