Ireland captain Robbie Keane will miss Friday's World Cup qualifier against Germany with an Achilles injury, the Irish FA announced Thursday.

The 32-year-old Keane suffered the injury this week, but could return for the qualifier against the Faroe Islands on Tuesday. Keane is the all-time leading scorer for Ireland with 54 goals in 121 appearances.

John O'Shea will captain Ireland instead of Keane, a former Celtic, Liverpool, Tottenham player who is now with the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS.

Keane is just the latest injury for Ireland, which will also be without Kevin Doyle, Richard Dunne, Sean St Ledger, James McClean, and Glenn Whelan against Germany.

Germany leads Group C in UEFA qualifying with six points, followed by Ireland and Sweden on three points apiece.
