The International Olympic Committee and United Nations have strengthened their commitment to use sport for achieving peace and progress in health, education and social development.
IOC President Jacques Rogge says the Olympic movement has "the moral duty to place sport at the service of humanity."
Rogge met U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday in Lausanne, Switzerland, to share updates on their joint projects. They include helping to ease travel problems facing Palestinian and Israeli athletes, and adopting an international Olympic truce during the 2012 London Games.
The IOC is also building a center in Haiti that combines sports with education and health programs to rebuild communities devastated by last year's earthquake.
