Injured driver James Hinchcliffe in good spirits, hopes to return for offseason testing

Published May 03, 2016

IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe says his recovery is ahead of schedule following a practice crash in Indianapolis that left him with a life-threatening leg injury, and that he hopes to return to his car in time for offseason testing.

Hinchcliffe says the goal is to start ramping up his rehab and physical therapy after another surgery at the end of this month.

The 28-year-old Hinchcliffe spoke to reporters Saturday at the Milwaukee Mile, site of IndyCar's 250-mile race on Sunday. He attended his first news conference since getting hurt.

Hinchcliffe crashed while practicing for the Indianapolis 500 and a broken piece of his suspension pierced his upper left thigh.

Hinchcliffe says his energy level is steadily increasing. He's anxious to get into a simulator to stay sharp.
