Top-seeded Mona Barthel retired while trailing her second-round match Wednesday at the Gastein Ladies tennis event.

Austrian qualifier Lisa-Maria Moser, ranked 725th in the world, was leading the world No. 31 Barthel 6-2, 4-3 when the German quit due to a shoulder injury on the red clay at Hotel Europaischerhof.

Eighth-seeded Italian Karin Knapp stayed in the draw by outlasting Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1 on Day 3.

Another second-round bout saw Czech Andrea Hlavackova overcome Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, while the final opening-round match saw Austrian favorite Yvonne Meusburger destroy Bosnian qualifier Jasmina Tinjic 6-0, 6-0. Hlavackova will meet Moser in Friday's quarterfinals.

Meusburger was last week's runner-up in Budapest, Hungary, and was the 2007 runner-up here in Bad Gastein.

The winner of this $235,000 tournament will earn $42,000.
