In brave talk ahead of must-win Algeria game, Russia's Berezutskiy says team 'bound to score'

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

Russia captain Vasily Berezutskiy says there's no doubt — his team will score on Thursday in its must-win match against Algeria at the World Cup.

Berezutskiy told a news conference on Wednesday that "we're bound to score tomorrow."

That's brave talk from a man whose team has only scored one goal so far in Group H, in an opening draw with South Korea.

Coach Fabio Capello insisted it wasn't for lack of trying, particularly in its 1-0 loss to Belgium.

Russia now has to beat Algeria to have a chance of qualifying for the second round in its first World Cup in 12 years. Even then, it may not progress if South Korea beats Belgium by a score line that overcomes Russia's advantage on goal difference.
