Hurricane threat wipes out final Web.com Tour Finals event

Published October 05, 2016

Associated Press

The final event for players to earn PGA Tour cards was canceled Wednesday because of Hurricane Matthew, cutting short the four-tournament qualifying series and costing one player his card by $392.

The Web.com Tour Championship was to start Thursday at Atlantic Beach Country Club.

A hurricane warming led city officials to order an evacuation of beaches in Jacksonville, and the PGA Tour had little choice but to wipe out the event.

The Web.com Tour Championship was the fourth and last event in the Web.com Tour Finals, which awards 25 cards for the PGA Tour season that starts next week. Tim Wilkinson received the last card by $392 over Rob Oppenheim.

A year ago, Oppenheim got the final card by $101.
