Howard leads Red Wings past Oilers

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Jimmy Howard made 29 saves, Valtteri Filppula broke a tie on a second-period power play and the Detroit Red Wings went on to beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 on Friday night for their third straight victory and sixth in seven games.

Justin Abdelkader opened the scoring for Detroit in the first period, and rookie Taylor Hall tied it for Edmonton on a power play in the second. Dan Cleary added an empty-net goal and had two assists for the Red Wings, coming off a 2-1 victory in Calgary on Wednesday night.

The Oilers have one win in their last nine games after a 2-0 start.

Hall, drafted first overall, scored his third goal and first time at home.

Detroit took the lead at 8:46 of the second period when Cleary made a nice backhand pass to Filppula at the side of the net and he sent the puck into the open cage.

The Red Wings came close to taking a two-goal lead before the second period ended, but Nikolai Khabibulin made a huge save, swatting away Henrik Zetterberg's shot.

Edmonton had the bulk of the third-period chances but couldn't get one past Howard before Cleary iced the game with 21 seconds left with his empty-netter.

NOTES: The Red Wings will conclude their three-game trip Saturday night in Vancouver. ... Howard hadn't lost in regulation in 22 starts, going 19-0-3. He's 6-0-1 this season. ... Oilers left winger Steve McIntyre missed the game because of a sore back.
