Houston Texans acquire QB Ryan Mallett, cut QB Case Keenum

Published February 05, 2015

Associated Press

The Houston Texans have acquired quarterback Ryan Mallett in a trade and released Case Keenum, part of a flurry of moves by the team on Sunday.

The 6-foot-6 Mallett, a third-round pick by New England in 2011, was Tom Brady's backup the past three seasons, but was passed up in training camp this year by second-round draft pick Jimmy Garoppolo. Mallett will reunite with Texans coach Bill O'Brien, who worked as the Patriots' offensive coordinator in 2011.

Keenum, a record-setting quarterback at the University of Houston, had been competing with rookie Tom Savage for the backup role behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. He went 28 for 52 with two interceptions in the preseason, not enough to keep a roster spot despite eight starts in 2013.
