Holmes to undergo brain surgery, miss 3 months

J.B. Holmes was forced to withdraw from The Barclays and will miss the next three months of competition due to a brain condition that requires surgery.

Holmes was diagnosed with Chiari malformations after feeling vertigo symptoms as early as May. He will undergo surgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital on September 1, begin chipping and putting within 30 days, hitting full shots and playing within 60 days and playing competitive golf within 90 days.

"I was really looking forward to the playoffs this year and improving on my 31st-place finish from 2010," Holmes said in a statement. "But with a three- month recovery before I can get back to form, we decided that the sooner I can get this procedure done, the better.

"I know when people hear 'brain surgery' it conjures up all kinds of images, but this is a relatively low-risk surgery and only takes about an hour and a half. Best of all, there's a very high success rate in fixing the condition."

Holmes is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour and has four top-10 finishes this year. He didn't make the cut in any of his last three events, dating back to the British Open in July.
