Hokies' name Johnson as new head coach

Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver announced Tuesday that former assistant coach James Johnson will take over as the Hokies' head men's basketball coach.

Johnson spent the last five seasons on the men's basketball staff, serving as an assistant coach from 2007-11 before being named associate head coach prior to last season.

"I am very pleased to welcome James Johnson as the new head men's basketball coach at Virginia Tech," Weaver said. "He is an individual with 19 years of coaching experience, who has spent the last five years here at Virginia Tech. He knows and has recruited most of our current players. We believe that he is the right person at this moment in time."

The Virginia native had accepted an assistant coaching position at Clemson last month, but returned to Blacksburg after former head coach Seth Greenberg was fired on April 23 after nine years at the helm.

Johnson spent two years as an assistant at George Mason, where he helped the Patriots to a 45-23 record and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2006, before joining the staff at Virginia Tech.
