Gomez opts for Fiorentina switch

Fiorentina has landed another potential impact player after agreeing to a deal with Bayern Munich for striker Mario Gomez.

The Viola has already signed midfielder Massimo Ambrosini, Spanish winger Joaquin and Ukrainian forward Oleksandr Jakovenko, with Gomez joining for a fee believed to be around $20 million.

And the addition of Gomez, who turns 28 on Wednesday, gives the club additional firepower as it prepares to compete in the Europa League this season following a fourth-place finish in Serie A last term.

Gomez moved to Bayern from Stuttgart in 2009 and went on to net 112 goals in 172 appearances for the Bavarians.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order at Bayern due to the emergence of Mario Mandzukic, who led the team with 15 goals in 24 Bundesliga matches.

Gomez still managed to tally 11 goals in 21 games, but he started just nine times in league play.

"My time in one of the best clubs in the world is over and the four years I've spent here were fantastic," Gomez said in a statement. "I want to thank everybody - the board, the players and the fans - for this extraordinary experience. Now there is a new chapter in my footballing career and I can't wait to wear the Fiorentina shirt and start my next adventure."
