Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray was an easy second-round winner, while London Games bronze medalist Juan Martin del Potro went by way of the upset Wednesday at the $2.649 million Rogers Cup tennis event, the sixth of nine ATP Masters tournaments this year.

The second-seeded Murray, who's a two-time Rogers Cup champion, won his seventh straight match overall by handling Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-3 in 1 hour, 22 minutes on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre. The powerful Brit was not broken in the predictable victory.

Murray upset Roger Federer in Sunday's marquee men's singles gold-medal match at the All England Club, where the British star lost to the Swiss great in the Wimbledon finale last month.

The high-flying Murray's third-round opponent will be 16th-seeded rising Canadian star Milos Raonic.

The sixth-seeded former U.S. Open champion del Potro, following an opening- round bye, succumbed to Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on Day 3. Stepanek fired nine aces past his tall Argentine counterpart.

Del Potro was the 2009 Rogers Cup runner-up to Murray in Montreal, as this event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

Another big Wednesday upset came when Jeremy Chardy doused third-seeded fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Chardy fired 10 aces and was not broken, while Tsonga popped eight aces, but was broken once, in the opening set.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych avoided an upset by holding off improving Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-4, while fifth-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic got past gritty Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Tenth-seeded Croat Marin Cilic handled former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-5, 6-3, while 12th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber drubbed Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2.

Other second-round action saw 14th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet dismiss Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-5 and Spaniard Marcel Granollers oust 15th-seeded German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4. Gasquet was the Rogers Cup runner- up in Montreal in 2006.

The newest Rogers Cup champ will collect $522,550.
