GM Gillis agrees to extension with Canucks

Vancouver Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis has agreed to terms on a contract extension, the team announced Monday.

Gillis, the 10th general manager in franchise history, completed his fourth season in the front office this year. He has led the Canucks to Northwest Division titles every season since joining the organization as well as back- to-back Presidents' Trophies the past two years.

"I am very pleased to be signing this extension to remain the president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks," Gillis said in a statement. "I am proud of the work our entire organization has done these past four years and look forward to continuing to build on our success. We are driven every day to try and win the Stanley Cup and will continue to focus on being a strong organization both on and off the ice."

Last season, Gillis' Canucks racked up a franchise-record 117 points on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals -- which ended with a loss to the Boston Bruins in seven games.

This year, the team again won the Presidents' Trophy with 111 points, but suffered a first-round loss in five games to the Los Angeles Kings.

During his tenure, Gillis has locked up several core players with long-term contracts through the 2012-13 season, including: Kevin Bieksa, Chris Higgins, Dan Hamhuis, Manny Malhotra, Ryan Kesler, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Roberto Luongo, Alex Burrows and Alex Edler.
