The New York Giants were forced to place veteran tight end Daniel Fells on injured reserve, Monday, with a staph infection that was discovered during treatment for his ankle injury.

Fells finishes the season with six receptions for 60 yards. With Fells out of the picture, the Giants are left thing at the tight end position. Larry Donnell -- who struggles as a blocker -- was forced to play 69-of-74 snaps in Week 4 following Fells' injury.

The Giants have undrafted free agent Will Tye slotted on the depth chart behind Donnell with former No. 3 tight end Jerome Cunningham dealing with an injury. Head coach Tom Coughlin talked about exploring the possibility of signing a veteran at tight end.

"That type of player may or may not be available," Coughlin said on a conference call Monday, per Tom Rock of Newsday. "We'll have to see where that stands."
