Former Wild captain Walz stressing fun at hockey camp

Former Minnesota Wild captain Wes Walz has seen his hockey school grow with each passing year - and he couldn't be happier.

"The goal of the camp is every year when the kids walk out on Friday afternoon is we want to make sure that the kids to have as much fun as possible," the former NHLer said of the Wes Walz Minnesota Wild Hockey School.

"Yes, we want to teach the kids how to shoot pucks, how to work on their crossovers, passing, skating and the proper technique and proper position ... but at the end of the day, we want to make sure they are having as much fun as they possibly can."

The camp, which has grown from 27 kids to approximately 160, split its time at the Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury. Minn., on Aug. 17-21, before spending the last four days at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.

The 45-year-old Walz also brought in current Wild center Ryan Carter and defensive prospect Mike Reilly to assist in the training.

Walz collected 109 goals and 151 assists in 607 career games with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings and Wild.
