Former Mizzou standout Michael Sam returning to school

Michael Sam is heading back to Columbia.

The former SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Missouri standout announced on his Twitter that he was accepted into a graduate program through the university. Sam also tweeted that he will be training for football concurrent to his schooling this fall.

It's been a rocky road for Sam from a professional football standpoint. After being drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Sam was unable to stick with both the Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.

He had a brief stint in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes, before leaving the team in August due to concerns over his mental health.

Per Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel had some thoughts on Sam.

"[Sam] came by my office a week or two ago. We talked. We didn't really talk about the future much. We were just talking about him still working out and what was going on. I knew at one time prior he was going to grad school. He told me that a year ago or so. Anyway, it was great seeing him. He's a great kid."
