Former Cy Young winner Gagne sent to minor league camp

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Former Cy Young winner Eric Gagne will continue his comeback at the Los Angeles Dodgers' minor league camp after the pitcher was among six players moved out of the team's major league clubhouse Monday.

Gagne, who holds the Major League Baseball record with 84 consecutive save conversions, has been hampered by elbow injuries and a torn rotator cuff since winning the 2003 National League Cy Young Award as a reliever.

"I'm on my way back," he wrote to Major League Baseball website mlb.com in a text message. "I knew it wasn't gonna be easy. But I'm gonna go down there and work my butt off and be ready if they need help!! Long season."

Last year Gagne, 34, played for the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am League as a starting pitcher/coach with moderate success. In 17 starts, he went 6-6 with a 4.65 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 102 2/3 innings.
