Former Chelsea manager Bobby Campbell dies at 78

LONDON (AP) Bobby Campbell, the former Chelsea manager who guided the club to the top flight in 1989, has died. He was 78.

Chelsea announced the death Saturday, saying it ''is greatly saddened to announce the passing of our former manager. ... Chelsea was very close to Bobby Campbell's heart and he will always be close to ours.''

Campbell took over at Stamford Bridge in 1988 and secured immediate promotion in his first full season with the club.

He also managed Fulham and Portsmouth and had coaching spells with Arsenal, Aldershot, Queens Park Rangers as well as two stints in Kuwait either side of his spell at Chelsea.

Campbell was born in Liverpool and later played for the Merseyside club making 25 appearances and scoring twice during a two-year spell at Anfield.
